💡 What is the Transfer Test?

The Transfer Test is taken in P7 (Year 7), usually in November. It helps decide which post-primary school you go to. There are two different tests you can sit:

  • AQE — 3 papers, focused on Maths & English. Used by schools like Methodist College, BRA, and more.
  • GL Assessment — 1 paper with 2 sections, covering English, Maths & Reasoning. Used by schools like RBAI, Strathearn, and others.
  • You can sit both tests — and many students do!
  • Both tests are based on what you've already learned in primary school — no tricks, just practice!

🌟 Top Tips for Success

🕑 Start early — a little practice every day beats cramming

Even 20–30 minutes of daily practice is more effective than hours of last-minute studying. Build it into your routine and it won't feel like a chore.

📖 Read, read, read — reading for fun builds comprehension & vocabulary

Grab books, comics, newspapers, or anything that interests you. The more you read, the faster and more confident you'll be with comprehension passages.

Practice past papers under timed conditions

Get used to the time pressure before the real day. Set a timer and work through a full paper — this trains your brain to stay calm and focused.

Don't leave blanks — in multiple choice, always have a go

There's no penalty for guessing. If you're stuck, eliminate the answers you know are wrong and make your best guess from what's left.

🔎 Check your work if you have time

Finished early? Go back and double-check your answers. Look out for silly mistakes — they're easy to spot the second time around.

💛 It's OK to feel nervous — everyone does!

A little nervousness is totally normal and can actually help you concentrate. Take a few deep breaths, believe in yourself, and do your best.

💤 Get a good night's sleep before the test

Your brain does its best work when it's well rested. No cramming the night before — relax, sleep early, and wake up fresh.

Remember: the transfer test is just one day — it doesn't define you!

You are so much more than a test score. Whatever happens, you'll end up at a great school. Be proud of the work you've put in!
